Insiders at the channel told this reporter that an investigation committee has been set up which will probe the leak. Sources close to Lucman said that channel authorities were miffed when he went off-script.
“I’ll say it on air that I’ve been ‘pressurized’ by Mian Amir Mehmood and Malik Riaz to do this programme”, Mubashar Lucman said in behind-the-scene comments in a special transmission with the real estate tycoon Malik Riaz, co-hosted by Meher Bokhari. The video of the comments, along with some other goings on was later posted on YouTube.
The controversial ‘off-air’ comments available on Youtube reveal that there was a surfeit of planted questions in the ‘special transmission’, and that most queries were either suggested by Malik Riaz, with anchor duo also found sharing questions and answers amongst the three of them.
“Why don’t you start talking about it yourself, otherwise [if we ask] it will seem planted, which it is, but I don’t know if it should look planted,” an otherwise ferocious Mehar at one point suggested to Malik Riaz.
Both Mehar and Lucman in the start reminded Riaz of mentioning ‘Code of Conduct’ for judges, where “as per section 4 listed on their website also, even if a judge is related to one of the lawyers involved in a case or personally knows someone in the case, they should quit,” Lucman says, while Mehar adds, “and in this case it’s his [CJ’s] son”.
Most of the conversation posted on YouTube pertains was recorded during commercial breaks, in which both anchors also claim to have received calls and text messages from various known figures, including Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Abdul Qadir Gillani. Midway through the programme, they also seem to have received instructions not to interrupt Riaz even if they were to run beyond the allotted time: “Yes, we know we are not supposed to interrupt him even if we have to prolong the programme.”
Interestingly, Lucman has been insisting to Malik Riaz from the start to take Geo’s Capital Talk anchorHamid Mir’s name on-air for “taking a villa” from the tycoon. With Riaz not obliging, the former asks the latter several times to ‘allow’ him to implicate Mir. During the transmission, he starts talking to someone over the mobile phone and asks him to insist to Malik Riaz to either name Hamid Mir or let him. “Please talk to him, he is Abdul Qadir Gilani,” Lucman says while handing over his cell phone to Malik Riaz.
Further, both anchors kept on trying hard to outdo each other in grabbing maximum time on air, while both claim that Riaz was on the programme because of him or her. In the middle of the programme, Lucman walks out in a huff while Riaz even claimed that he is the only journalist who is “through” with his son and has “family relations” with him.
Finally when Lucman is coaxed into coming back, Riaz reminds him that he will have to answer a lot of questions about his comment with regard to “having been pressurised by Mian Amir” on-air.
At another point, Riaz asks Meher and Lucman to insist to him after the break on telling them about his meetings with the CJ and also why Riaz is present in all business deals struck in the country.
Meanwhile, Maryam Nawaz also sends an sms to Meher to say it on air that they were offered a bullet proof car but they refused to be obliged, while Riaz says things about the Punjab government while a female voice murmurs in the background against the provincial government, and Malik Riaz duly snubs her for saying that.
All in all, interesting conversation that shows where the inspiration and titillation in such news programmes emanates from.
